It’s almost impossible to believe that just days ago, Itay Ashkenazi, 30, was sat in our office at Penguin, a happy-go-lucky member of our team. Now, he’s on the front line of a war he would give anything not to have to fight.
As the unimaginable atrocities perpetrated by Hamas were only just beginning to emerge on Saturday, Itay kissed his wife and kids goodbye, got in his car and drove straight down to the border with Gaza.
Itay knew his mission - to support Duvdevan, the special forces unit of the Israel Defense Forces set up to fight terrorism. Itay served with this unit over a decade ago and, since completing his service, has continued to support them as a reservist and volunteer. Never could he have imagined that he’d be stood with them today, in the wake of such horror, bloodshed and brutality at the hands of Hamas.
As Israel gets dragged into a bitter war, Itay, along with thousands of young people, have been drafted to protect the country and prevent any further slaughter of innocent people by organizations committed to extreme violence.
