Mashable’s Social Media Day – Tel Aviv Edition

Written by The Penguin Team | Jul 3, 2014 6:54:00 PM

A few weeks ago, our almighty CEO was invited to speak at Mashable’s first Social Media Day in Tel Aviv. We jumped at the opportunity to take part in this event that really put Tel Aviv on the Social Media map. Special thanks to our friends at Oktopost for organizing a great meet up!

Mark Lerner, Director of Marketing at Oktopost, kicked off the event with an intro to Mashable before introducing our own Perry Nalevka. Perry took the stage with a presentation called “The New Sales is Marketing” to talk about how we can use social media to align the marketing and sales funnel. You can check out his slide deck here:

I was pleased to see some marketing rock stars presenting including Yael Givon from Stevie, Ben Lang of Mapped in Israel fame, and wearable tech expert Nir Kouris. I think everyone would agree with me that Ben stole the show with his talk on creating an international holiday. My personal highlight of the evening is when he forgot about Hummus Day!

A panel of experts closed the event with some great discussions. The biggest takeaways from my end were:

  1. Understand your client – who he is and where he’s hanging out so you can properly engage.
  2. If you want to be a big player in the Facebook game – you’ve got to pay to play. Facebook’s algorithm blocks most organic attempts to reach your audience so you’ve got to lay down the dough to make an impact.
  3. Opinions are mixed on automating social media but one thing is certain. You’ve got to sound like real people. No one wants to engage with a robot, or worse, a salesman. Be real. Listen to your audience and answer in kind.

All in all, it was a great event and we look forward taking part in next year's Social Media Day TLV.
